UNDERSTANDING OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
Distance Education- is method of education where students can study in their own choice of place and time without having to meet their teachers face-to-face.
CHARACTERISTICS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
- Provides learners with physical disabilities, work and other personal reasons a chance to learn and be educated without attending formal schooling.
- It aims to achieve independent learning.
- Provides learners with learning packages which prepared by qualified instructional
- Designers and are supported by various technologies.
- It provides accessibility to learners
- It provides convenience and flexibility to learners.
- It is cost-effective.
- It provides greater access to new technology.
- It supports student-centered approach.
ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY SYSTEM
Broadcast Radio
Radio is an ADS which is considered as a powerful too when delivering a lesson or disseminating information to a large groups of student
The use of radio has started as early as 1970’s to employ active learning through instructional conversation
Delivering lesson via radio saves time energy, and money.
ADVANTAGES
- Most accessible medium in terms of geographical reach
- Cost of radio I relatively low
- Radio can be used with other media or materials
- It helps people in rural areas be in the ABC’s and 123’s of life
DISADVANTAGES
- People in the rural areas may experience difficulty in purchasing a radio and having it repaired.
- Poor reception may bring poor delivery of instruction
- Broadcast schedules may bring inconvenience to students for pace and time beyond their control
- Learning without visuals may be challenging for visual learners
- Interaction among learners is limited.
AUDIO TELECONFERENCE
- Audio Teleconference is also known as telephone/phone conferencing (Teleconferencing).
- Teleconferencing is an alternative delivery system in which instruction may happen through telecommunication system
- Audio conferencing is a technology that is flexible, economically reasonable, and available.
- Audio conferencing is a synchronous technology that transmits communication in real time.
POINTERS TO MAKE INSTRUCTION INTERACTIVE
- Acknowledged all contributions and inputs of the students
- If students wish to say something applies the “Interruption protocol” which is the equivalent of “raising hands” of the students in a face-to-face.
- Respond to answers positively
- Allow students appropriate time to think prior giving answers to the questions or problem raised.
- Have small group discussions when solving complex problems.
- Manage participation of each student to avoid students dominating the teaching and learning process.
- Encourage the students to do more of the talking
VIDEO CONFERENCING
Video Conferencing is used by teachers and students to transmit course work at a distance.

- It allows learning at a distance
- It allows learning through demonstrations as seen in the video.
- It allows global learning by having speakers or guest lecturers share their expertise virtually.
- It allows continuous interactively
- It allows access to information
- It allows conduction of virtual field trips.
- It stimulates learning environments
- It is flexible
- It is affordable
- It promotes global collaboration

- Adobe Acrobat Connect- This is powerful Conferencing tool that allows sharing of files and use of whiteboard where teachers and students can write down their thoughts
- AT and T Connect- This is more formal and professional way of video conferencing that may be costly.
- Mega Meeting- This supports 16 participants which can work at any browser regardless of the operating system used.

WEB CONFERENCING
Web Conferencing
- Is usually interchangeably used with video conferencing
- Webinars and webcasts are two types of video Conferencing.
a. Webinar is a one way conference between one or more speakers
b. Webcast is a live streaming event, broadcast over the internet.
